Etsy tags are one of the two most important factors in search ranking โ the other is your title. When a buyer searches for something on Etsy, the algorithm matches their search terms against the title and tags of all relevant listings. A listing with 13 well-researched tags covers significantly more search queries than one with 6 generic ones.
Each tag can be up to 20 characters. You can use single words or phrases โ phrases are almost always more valuable because they match specific search intent. 'Custom coffee mug' as a tag matches buyers who searched that exact phrase; 'coffee' as a tag matches an enormous number of queries, most of which are not buyers.
Etsy's algorithm gives a ranking boost when a search term matches both the title and a tag simultaneously. This is why your tags and title should mirror each other โ every important phrase in your tags should appear somewhere in your title, and vice versa.
Start with Etsy's own search bar. Type your primary keyword and look at the autocomplete suggestions โ those are real searches buyers are making. Each autocomplete suggestion is a potential tag. Write down 20โ30 suggestions, then select the 13 most relevant to your specific product.
Use a mix of broad and specific tags. Broad tags like 'gifts for her' have enormous competition but real volume โ they are worth including for exposure. Specific tags like 'funny retirement mug for teacher' have lower volume but extremely high purchase intent. Buyers using specific search terms are much closer to buying than buyers browsing broad categories.
| Tag Type | Example | Volume | Competition | Intent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product type | funny coffee mug | High | High | Medium |
| Occasion | birthday gift for her | High | Very High | High |
| Recipient | gifts for dog lovers | Medium | Medium | High |
| Style/niche | cottagecore aesthetic | Low-Med | Low | High |
| Specific phrase | funny retirement gift mug | Low | Low | Very High |
Etsy Stats shows which search terms are driving traffic to each of your listings. Go to Shop Manager โ Stats โ Search Terms. If a search term is driving traffic but not sales, your design or price may be the issue, not your keywords. If a term drives both traffic and sales, ensure it is in your title and all related listings.
